Sen. Arlen Specter
Four years ago, Sen. Arlen Specter proudly signed on as a co-sponsor of the Employee Free Choice Act. Two years ago, he voted to allow a vote on the bill. Yesterday, he announced he will try to block the bill from even coming to a Senate vote.
Working family voters have always considered Specter a man of conscience, a senator with a mind of his own. Now it looks like pressure from Big Business and right-wing ideologues has shifted him from actively co-sponsoring a bill to actively blocking it from even getting a Senate vote.
I’m beyond disappointed in Sen. Specter and can only imagine how you feel.
Use our simple online tool to send your message by fax to Sen. Specter’s office in Washington, D.C., and all seven of his Pennsylvania district offices.
Don’t sit idly by while your senator’s flip-flop threatens the most important labor law reform of our generation. Now is the time to make your voice heard.
When Sen. Specter announced his decision yesterday, he used the economic crisis to attempt to justify it. But the Employee Free Choice Act is not the problem—it’s a crucial part of the solution. By restoring workers’ freedom to form unions and bargain for a better life, the Employee Free Choice Act is key to rebuilding an economy that works for everyone.
President Obama, large majorities in both houses of Congress and 73 percent of the public understand this and support the Employee Free Choice Act. What doesn’t Sen. Specter understand? It looks like he has caved in to the corporate CEOs and lobbyists who helped create the economic mess we are in now.
If Sen. Specter honestly opposes the legislation he previously supported, he can vote against it. But there's no way he should block the full Senate from voting on the Employee Free Choice Act. Our labor laws are deeply flawed, as Sen. Specter himself acknowledges.
The freedom to join together and bargain with employers for fair wages and better benefits is critical to rebuilding our middle class. And now is exactly the time to do it, as we begin to revive our economy so it works for everyone.
Send a strong message to Sen. Specter today.
