The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 29 represents nearly 1,500 workers in multiple agencies across the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. We play a critical role in ensuring that our power infrastructure continues to deliver clean, safe, and sustainable energy that keeps you warm in the winter, cool in the summer, and handles your everyday needs.
Our members show up at agencies across the region — on the line, in the plant, and on the front lines when storms hit.
The vast majority of our members work at Duquesne Light Company, keeping the lights on for over 1 million people across Allegheny and Beaver Counties. Your day starts and ends with the power provided and maintained by IBEW 29 members — and when storms hit, we're on the front lines working through the elements to get your power restored as quickly as possible.
Our members at Vistra Corp continually deliver great service at the Beaver Valley Power Station, working to keep the region's electrical infrastructure safe, reliable, and efficient.
IBEW 29 also has members working at the NAES - Brunot Island Power Plant, dedicating themselves to the safe and reliable operation of two of our region's vital energy facilities.
And we have members proudly supporting service operations at the Pittsburgh Port Authority. (PRT)
These employees are full-time hourly cycle employees in the federal coordinated campaign, and work under the direction of the PA Democratic State Committee. These jobs include Field Organizers, Distributed Organizers, Campus Organizers, Regional Organizing Directors, Regional Political Directors, and Constituency Directors. These members are the most valuable resource during the Campaign process.
Six local unions, one merger, and a legacy that now spans three generations of Pittsburgh's electrical workforce.
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers formed six separate local unions to represent the employees of the Duquesne Light Company, then part of the Philadelphia Company.
Local 149 represented Central Office employees of both the Duquesne Light Company and the Pittsburgh Railway Company — also then part of the Philadelphia Company. Pittsburgh Railways was the single largest part of a governmental takeover of several transit companies heading toward bankruptcy; the merger became the Port Authority of Allegheny County.
The IBEW united the six locals under System Council U-10, which oversaw contract negotiations and areas of common interest across the local unions in dealing with Duquesne Light.
All six local unions and System Council U-10 merged together, forming Local 29.
The IBEW officially chartered a Retirees Association for Local 29, extending the brotherhood to members long after their working years.
